Georgia Septic Regulations

Georgia regulates on-site sewage management systems through the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) and county boards of health. Manual and technical guidance follow the Georgia Manual for On-Site Sewage Management Systems.

Permits

A permit from the county board of health is required before any septic system installation. Site evaluations by a certified evaluator must be completed first. Repair permits are also required for significant modifications.

Inspections

Installation inspections are conducted by county environmental health staff. Georgia does not mandate routine inspections for conventional systems but recommends pumping every 3-5 years. Advanced systems may require maintenance contracts.
